Message from Australian High Commissioner, Suzanne McCourt on the Occasion of her Presentation of Credentials to the President of Malawi

18 November 2015
I am delighted to advise that I have today presented to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi my letter of credentials from the Australian Governor-General confirming my appointment as High Commissioner of Australia to Malawi.

During our discussion I was also able to pass on to him and the Malawian people the good wishes of the Governor-General and the people of Australia.

I am very proud to represent Australia in Malawi, ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’. Malawi is a country with which Australia continues to have strong cooperation and people-to-people links. There are many examples of positive engagement between our two countries including through our membership of the Commonwealth.

Australia has been a major contributor to Malawi’s development in recent years, having provided over A$80 million since 2005. This assistance has included a significant contribution to water and sanitation projects in Malawi’s cities and towns; our support to link small-scale farmers to markets; our assistance to Malawian communities through Australian NGO projects, and our support for community projects through our small grants programs. We are very proud of the numerous Australia Award scholarships we have provided to Malawians to study at Australian universities. I was delighted to meet some of these impressive students in Australia prior to my departure. Through these activities, we contributed to the substantial progress that Malawi has made in delivering on the Millennium Development Goals.

Australian companies have a history of investment in Malawi. This country has great economic potential and one of my priorities as High Commissioner will be to encourage Australian companies to look closely at Malawi as an investment opportunity.

During my term, I look forward to deepening Australia’s linkages with Malawi, including through exploring opportunities for enhanced economic and trade links between our two countries, and furthering people-to-people and official links.

Mlungu dalitsani Malawi.
